Social Media Platforms That Aren’t Owned by Meta

A blended group exploring independent social networks and community platforms on multiple devices.

Meta owns some of the largest social products in the world, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp. For many people that ecosystem is convenient. Others deliberately seek alternatives because they want different ownership, feed models, moderation systems, privacy approaches, or community cultures.

Bluesky and open-protocol social networking

Bluesky is independently operated and built on the AT Protocol, which is designed to support a more open social ecosystem.

Its custom-feed approach is especially interesting for users who want more choice over how information is organized.

Mastodon and the federated social web

Mastodon is not one centrally controlled social network. Independent servers participate in a federated network, giving communities more autonomy over governance and moderation.

That structure is different from both Meta and traditional venture-backed social applications.

Reddit, Discord, and community-first alternatives

Reddit and Discord are not replacements for every Meta product, but they serve major social functions through topic communities, chat, voice, and interest-based participation.

They demonstrate that social connection does not have to be organized primarily around a traditional friend feed.

Independent emerging networks

Smaller networks such as MeWe, Spill, and other independent platforms offer different combinations of privacy, cultural focus, creator tools, or general social networking.

ECCOOZS also belongs in the emerging independent-network category, with a community-first social model and integrated business and creator opportunities.

Ownership matters, but experience matters too

A platform being independent does not automatically make it better. Users should still evaluate moderation, security, product quality, network activity, business model, and how the service treats communities.

The goal is not simply to escape one company. It is to choose environments that better match what you want from social media.
